The Concept of Personal Health and Its Importance

Health is an overall condition of mental, physical and social well being where infirmity and illness are absent. A number of definitions have been use for such purposes over the years. Some of these are laid down in the universally accepted texts like the Oxford Dictionary and the Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (which provide synonyms for many English words).

The most common aspect that defines the general concept of health is the absence of ill health or disability brought about by old age or some physical debilitation. It also involves the maintenance of good health, which is facilitated by the right food, regular exercise, relaxation, and social support. Mental health has to do with the person’s ability to live well with his attitude towards life, spirituality and relationships. These facets have to be in harmony as they affect each other.

Our personal health is affected by factors that range from our genetic makeup to the environment we live in. Genetics determines aspects like your body type, your weight, your blood pressure, your height and hair color. The environment you live in contributes to aspects like your sleep, your diet, your physical activity level and your general lifestyle. This is what we call environmental stress and this can bring about a number of ill effects on your body including physical discomfort and pain, emotional stress and even mental health ailments.
