The Social Determinants of Good Health

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a condition of “complete physical, emotional and social well being and not just the absence of sickness and infirmity”. A wide variety of definitions have also been applied to health since time immemorial. In the United States, the concept of health has increasingly taken on a political and social meaning. Today, it has become important for people to be aware of their personal level of health.

The definition of good health is a balanced combination of a high fiber diet, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco use. It is considered to be the optimal condition for a person’s health. Many people today are concerned about the spread of disease. A high fiber diet helps to keep the digestive system healthy by absorbing excess cholesterol and other material that can lead to heart disease, which in turn increases the chances of heart attacks and strokes.

Good health is influenced by several social determinants. The social environment where one resides, for instance, can have a strong influence on health. The level of personal safety, the cleanliness of the environment, and the general resources available to people all have a strong influence on people’s well-being. It has been found that the quality of relationships that people have with their family and friends plays an important role in how well they are emotionally and physically healthy. Finally, the level of education that a person has had also has a significant effect on their well-being.
