Why Is Sports Numbers So Decreasing?
Sports are universal, they are our greatest recreational pastimes and they are an important part of our culture. Sportive events encompass a wide range of different types and genres including ice hockey, motor racing, cricket, soccer, and golf just to name a few. The number of people actively participating in sports has been on the decline over the past several years but sports can still be a major part of social life in many ways. Many people take part in organized sports such as sports during childhood where as adults many have to find ways to occupy themselves from work and other commitments.
Although it’s very hard to accurately measure actual participation statistics for various sports around the globe, you can provide a general idea of how popular certain sports are by looking at the number of people who regularly attend sporting events. The question then becomes how much of this social activity is physical exertion or pure leisure time. It’s not uncommon for many sports spectators to say that they simply don’t get involved in any particular sport because they do that or they don’t that – it’s not like they go out and purchase their own body gladiator sandals or wetsuit. If a large proportion of sports spectators and participants are indicating that they get their enjoyment from engaging in physical exertion rather than simply watching the ball being hit about the net, then the decline in the participation rate may be due to this factor.
Perhaps the most interesting factor to consider when looking at the decline in participation rates is the increased popularity of certain sports names. For example soccer is currently one of the most popular sports names in the world with over 260 million people registered as fanatics across the globe. Similarly, basketball and baseball have also experienced similar rises in popularity, though their respective sport’s revenue amounts aren’t anywhere near those of football. If you take these two examples and then graph the number of sport-related articles in the press, news reports and sports magazines over the last ten years then you’ll see a consistent downward trend. The correlation here is that sports fans want to associate themselves with their favourite team or player and if that person is no longer alive then it’s pretty much impossible to actively participate in the same game as they did.
