What Is Good Health?

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is an “age-appropriate balance of physiological health and functional capacity determined through knowledge of the body’s processes, structure and function.” A number of other definitions have also been used over the years for different medical purposes. In the United States, health is a state of being healthy, with a person considered to be healthy if they meet criteria specified by a government health board. Health is viewed in a political context as being essential to human welfare. Some people believe that a person should strive to remain healthy as they age, while others think that age should be an acceptable point for deciding when to start taking preventive measures.

The ability to enjoy a good health is considered to be a basic human right. It has been stated that “health is wealth”, because good health allows one to participate fully in the community in which they live. Good health also allows the individual to contribute to the economic well-being of their family. Lack of health can lead to social, economical, and political problems. Illness, surgery, accidents and death all result from the lack of good health. Most of these problems are brought on by the prevalence of diseases, but some are caused by habits and behaviours that are not good for the person, such as smoking and drug use.

Being healthy can mean different things to different people. Health is often defined by the National Health Service (NHS) as the presence of two or more essential qualities, namely physical strength and mental vigour. According to this definition, a person who meets these two criteria is said to be physically well. Mental vigour is considered to be a crucial element in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
