Concepts of Well-Being and Health

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a condition “of full physical, mental and emotional well-being with no limitations”. Different definitions have been used over the years for various purposes. However, in order to truly understand what health really is, one must first be able to define it. By definition, health is the capacity to live well with normal physiological processes and activities even in the face of severe challenges.

The definition of a healthy lifestyle may vary from person to person depending on the circumstances. For example, a healthy lifestyle may mean adopting a good diet, regular exercise, and minimizing exposure to toxins. A good diet is one characterized by adequate intake of nutrients while avoiding or minimizing consumption of substances that are detrimental to health such as tobacco smoke, drugs, alcohol, and food that is high in fat, sugar, cholesterol, and lack of exercise. Regular exercise is an activity that enhances the function of the heart and lungs as well as maintaining and promoting good health. In developing a mental health, one must consider engaging in activities that foster creativity and interpersonal relationships.

Developing a good mental health means having good self-esteem. It also means accepting the reality of problems as they arise instead of dwelling on them endlessly and becoming stressed, depressed, anxious, or mentally ill. Developing physical health involves eating a healthy diet, practicing moderate exercise, and avoiding exposure to harmful substances such as tobacco smoke and exposure to too much noise. Maintaining a healthy emotional health involves taking care of yourself emotionally and mentally as well as physically. It involves helping others to deal with emotional problems, developing problem solving skills, developing a sense of worth and positive social behaviors, and developing one’s own sense of self-confidence. Having a combination of these components allows a person to attain a state of well being and good health.
