Understanding the Relationship Between Sports and Physical Activity
Sports (or physical sports) is any forms of physically demanding physical activity that, through organised or casual involvement, attempt to utilize, improve or maintain certain physical prowess and abilities while also providing entertainment for participants, and sometimes, spectators. It can be defined as a combination of sports and activities, most often played on a structured court or field. Some of the most popular sports around are football, baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, tennis, golf, track and field, hockey, motocross, cricket, rugby, racing and motor-racing. Each of these sports require specific skills, but there are numerous ways to improve each of them, depending on the specific sport involved. In general, though, physical sports include contact sports such as wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, MMA, kickboxing, taekwondo, judo, surfing, skiing, bicycling, climbing, cheerleading, baseball, rugby, basketball, softball and tennis.
Physical exercises and sports that promote cardiovascular fitness, agility and speed are most often called sports. Common sports activities include running, walking, biking, playing tennis, swimming, rowing, racquetball, basketball and weightlifting. As time passes, more activities have been added to the list. The most common physical activities people participate in include endurance events such as running, cycling, sailing, tennis, golf, weightlifting, gymnastics and dance. In recent years, the inclusion of sport activities has increased with the popularity of Olympic Games and sports such as baseball, basketball and football.
All of the above sports can be classified as physical activity, since all require the use of both the brain and the muscles, both of which are used in coordinating actions. To better understand the relationship between sports and physical abilities, it is helpful to understand that most skills learned in sports can be transferred to other fields and activities. For instance, a talented baseball player can develop into an excellent golfer, or a skilled tennis player can become an excellent surfer. In the same way, many skills acquired in sports can be applied to non-sporty activities, making them valuable and important assets for all kinds of people. In the end, we can say that sports are a very important part of our lives, since sports teach important values such as fairness, patience and respect, all of which can be useful in many situations.
