The Definition of Health

The term health has various definitions over the centuries, with the World Health Organization defining health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.” However, the term is most commonly used as a general term for physical and mental well-being, and may be further defined as the absence of disease, infirmity, or injury. A person who is healthy is free from any disease or disorder that affects their physical or mental well-being.

Historically, WHO has defined health as the absence of disease, but this definition no longer reflects the reality of health in the world today. While the World Heath Organization describes health as “complete physical and mental well-being,” it is important to remember that it is also a social and emotional well-being. People can promote their health by engaging in activities that are beneficial to their physical and mental health. In addition to reducing and eliminating unhealthy behaviors, people can also promote their health by avoiding stressful situations.

The World Health Organization’s Constitution outlines the definition of health as “complete physical and social well-being without distinction of social, economic, or religious belief.” The constitution explains that a country’s legal obligations to protect its citizens’ right to health must be universal and timely. It states that nation states should provide adequate health services to their citizens, regardless of their race, religion, or social status. This means that health care systems and policies should be based on human rights, not on socioeconomic status or political beliefs.
